Short version
46 wordsFounded in Brussels in 2018, Aleph Quintet brings together five musicians from Tunisia, France and Portugal. Oud, violin, piano, electric bass and drums blend contemporary jazz, North African musical traditions and improvisation. Their second album, Hiwar (Igloo Records, 2025), received Jazz Magazine's top rating, the “Choc”.
Long version
168 wordsFounded in Brussels in 2018, Aleph Quintet brings together Akram Ben Romdhane (oud), Marvin Burlas (violin), Wajdi Riahi (piano), Théo Zipper (electric bass) and Diogo Q. Alexandre (drums). Coming from Tunisia, France and Portugal, the five musicians draw on North African musical traditions, the language of contemporary jazz and the power of improvisation to create a sound that is both rooted and constantly evolving.
After the critically acclaimed Shapes of Silence (2023), the band released Hiwar (“dialogue” in Arabic) on Igloo Records in 2025: Jazz Magazine's “Choc”, a Paris-Move “Coup de cœur” and a pick in The Best Jazz on Bandcamp. At the end of 2025, the French magazines Jazz News and Jazz Magazine named it best international band of the year, ahead of Hiatus Kaiyote and The Bad Plus.
The quintet has played more than 100 concerts in 12 countries, from the Bimhuis in Amsterdam to Fasching in Stockholm, and from Visa For Music in Rabat to the Carthage Music Days, where it won the Silver Tanit.
French version
Version courte
